3 Tips to Protect Your Smile During Summer

Protect your smile during summerBelieve it or not, summer is already here, which means plenty of blue sky and sunshine. It’s the perfect time to head outdoors to play your favorite sport or hang out by the pool during a barbeque. While you find ways to beat the heat and make the most of warm weather, you’ll also want to protect your smile. There are some activities that can be damaging to your dental health. Don’t worry, here are 3 tips to enjoy summer without compromising your beautiful smile.

1. Prevent tooth sensitivity.

Summer wouldn’t be the same without ice cream, popsicles, and slushies. Unfortunately, if you’re prone to tooth sensitivity, a cold treat can make you pucker your lips in pain. Sensitivity can be caused by several issues, like an untreated cavity, exposed tooth roots, or a small crack. You don’t need to skip the tasty treats. Your dentist can pinpoint the source of your discomfort to solve the problem. You can also use a desensitizing toothpaste while you wait for your appointment.

2. Watch what you drink.

Nothing tastes better than an ice-cold glass of soda or lemonade on a hot day. Although they are refreshing, sugary and acidic beverages can erode your enamel. Essentially, every time you drink one, you’re bathing your teeth in sugar, which can lead to cavities. It’s best to limit your consumption of sodas, juices, and sports drinks containing sugar. If you give in to your craving, your dentist recommends drinking it all at once instead of sipping it throughout the day. While it’s fine to have a sugary drink occasionally, it’s ideal to choose water whenever possible. You’ll keep your smile healthy and stay hydrated during the summer.

3. Protect your teeth with an athletic mouthguard.

It’s a great time to head outside to participate in sporting activities, like football, soccer, or rollerblading. While you stay active, don’t place your smile at risk of a dental emergency. Although you might believe one will never happen to you, 1 in 6 Americans has a dental emergency annually. Most are sports-related and could be prevented with an athletic mouthguard. The custom-fit device provides an added layer of protection for your teeth, soft tissues, and jaw if there’s trauma to your face. Research shows it can also lessen the severity of a concussion. Mouthguards are available over-the-counter; however, it’s better to visit your dentist for one. They are personalized to fit your mouth to provide the maximum level of protection.

Enjoy a Healthy Summer Smile

As you soak up the sun and indulge in summer foods, commit to visiting your dentist. They’ll ensure your smile is clean and healthy all season long.
